snakes in frankfurt

I have been to the Frankfurt Airport probably 20 times and never to the city of Frankfurt. But today we had a 6 hour layover so we decided we’d check it out, even though the passport control guy (who was impressed with my german, ha!) advised against it. The Hauptbahnhof had a snake exhibit, and […]

arrivederci!

We said our goodbyes and Giuliana was crying as we left Pieve di Cerreto Saturday morning. Now we’re in Amsterdam, just about to depart for Boston. We managed to find the train and take a little walk around the city. Lots of english speaking and “spikey shoes” as Bella pointed out. We were happy to […]

antico albergo, bagni caldi

We made one last visit to our favorite pool today… Bella swam for about 4 hours, stopping only for a hike down the hill to eat lunch and gelato. Now that we know the short cut, it only took a cono di gelato’s worth of time to get back up to the spa.

torta cioccolata

In four weeks, I haven’t eaten much chocolate. This, despite being in one of the major fine chocolate countries of the world, and reading David Lebovitz, who writes about European chocolate factories at least once a week. treni

Twice this week we took the train from Borgo a Mozzano to Lucca and to Florence. Fun, fast (usually) and convenient. All kinds of different trains too.

il mio risotto

Alisa has been talking about risotto lately, so at the store today I examined the selection and picked out the plainest looking bag i could find: After my work calls and catch up, I threw this together: saute for a few minutes, until onion is soft: 1 T butter 1 T olive oil 6 garlic […]

musica italiana

One good way to pick up a language when you’re in that country is to listen to the popular music. That method worked really well for me in Berlin and Moscow, and even in Wales, although there wasn’t quite enough environmental conversation around me to reinforce it there. In Italy we’ve been listening to Radio […]

borzois

In Lucca! First at Piazza San Martino, and then at Piazza Napoleone. But no Italian Greyhounds yet! Although Bella claims to have seen one on Sunday with Jamilah, when I was gone.
