giorno di risparmio energetico

The one time I don’t bring a camera… Today is Energy Saving day on the Devil’s Bridge — instead of lighting it with the big floodlights, big candles were lit all along both sides. A few had blown out so I tried to light one with an old train ticket, nearly catching myself on fire as well. Unfortunately, Tinto Osteria was closed, so we started the trip with a wonderful I Macelli meal — truffles, chestnuts, pears, walnuts & tiramisu!

off we go!

patricia, bella and i are off to italy for the president’s week vacation!

a peak inside Rocca

After David took off on his run, I was walking down from the ruins on Saturday and saw the church door was open, so I stepped in… strangely though it didn’t look like a church inside. And when I saw the newly remodeled bathroom, I though someone might actually live there! I took a couple photos but heard people walking up. I turned to leave and saw two women coming in, and asked them (in my best Italian…) “Is this a church?” Yes… “Is it open?” No…. “Ok!” And then I left 🙂

a day at home in italy

After spending a beautiful Friday morning walking all over Venice fresh off the night train, we took the noon train to Florence and arrived home to Pieve di Cerreto Friday evening. All looked good… house still standing, electricity still on (though we discovered today that it must have been out for a while since everything in the fridge and freezer had molded). Went to I Macelli for dinner and had their excellent minestra di cereali, ravioli di castagne, tordelli di zucca, anatra d’arancia and chocolate marmalade rum torte.

Today, Saturday, we woke up early enough to get the laundry hung, start cleaning out the fridge, and walk into town in time for coffee and the morning shopping. Tried to pay the property tax bill, but the bank was closed and forgot before it was too late that I should have paid it at the post office. Saw Mietta and her dachshund, bought a file (lima), batteries (pila) and a tape measure. Walked home in the blazing sunshine, took at walk up the hill to Rocca, David did a run and I walked back to the goats to meet him.

Got the fridge all cleaned out, fixed a few things around the house, took some measurements, then hit the afternoon shopping shift. I fell asleep in the car on the way back, took a nap, then out we went to dinner…

The plan was to go to Osteria Tinto to visit Paulo e Paulo, but it was closed! Called La Mora and they were closed too… thought we’d find a new trattoria near La Mora, but ended up at Butterfly instead, which was outstanding, as usual. The tasting menu was exceptional in fact, the only slight disappointment was that the pasta with black truffles was overpowered by the anchovies.

Off to Frankfurt tomorrow to see our Lufthansa friend Daphne, then back to the US. Far too short a visit, we barely got a chance to say hi to the neighbors, but I think I just might be able to swing a week in February again wtih Bella…

A Lamborghini Gallardo for Italian Police

We saw the Lamborghini driving in Lucca on the street a few days ago, and then again showing off at the Lucca Comics and Games Show.
